I’ve been on a Marvin Gaye binge the last several days. Listening to his heart poured out in his music has been very interesting. Even with his death nearly 30 years ago, his music is an accurate depiction of our current cultural issues. In my eyes that brings validation to his experiences and shows an honesty in his writing. True artists know their surroundings, are well versed in their culture and many times act as prophets of their day. I believe Marvin Gaye was an artist in its truest sense. Where are the artists, poets, musicians, writers of our day whose voice will live on long after they’re gone? Artists like Marvin Gaye have set the bar very high for many who want to lead in pop culture. But sadly I have not seen or heard anyone in our day who even comes close.
