Psalm 133

1Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity!
2It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on the collar of his robes!
3It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the LORD has commanded the blessing,
life forevermore.

If you have a spouse, siblings, coworkers, friends, or come into contact with other human beings you understand and feel the tension of relationships. They are at many times, hard, difficult and stressful to maintain.

But rarely, if you’ve ever experienced unity in your home, peace in your work place with others, or had a good refreshing conversation . You know something “otherworldly” and strangely out of place happened for a brief moment.

That’s what David describes in Psalm 133. When a group of people are unified especially believers it is comparative to anointing oil being poured out over the head of Aaron. It sounds a bit strange but think of what this moment meant for the people in Israel. Just the idea of being anointed was of major significance. It meant to be set apart for the service of God. It meant many times to be endowed with special gifts or grace from God. But that’s not all. Unity is like Aaron, the first high priest being anointed to represent the people to God. This gave man the opportunity for God to dwell with his people. So to experience unity in a body of believers is to experience a connection with God, where he dwells among you.

David goes on to say it is like the dew of Hermon. Dew in a dry climate is a great blessing for the vegetation. The dew is what replenishes life lost in the scorching heat. David expresses that unity among brothers and sisters brings life and refreshment to those upon whom it falls. To know unity is to experience a rich blessing from the lord.

In such a short Psalm, David packs it full of rich imagery to express the brief moments of unity that all men crave. Unity is definitely a beautiful thing.
