John 15:5-8

“5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

I have always thought that scripture memory “seemed” important in the life of a Christian. But I had never seen it taken very seriously. My goal as a Christian (I thought) was to know the Bible pretty well, understand the major concepts and live a decent Christian (moral) life. Scripture memory seemed like something only for legalistic rabbis of old or theological geniuses who had no life and only read the Bible. Besides, I did scripture memory in college and I can’t remember any of the 300 verses that I HAD to memorize. Which goes to show it’s impossible…Or so I thought.

In this video John Piper gives the best, awe inspiring, convicting argument for scripture memory that I have ever heard or seen. It has challenged my thinking and has pushed me to a greater desire to know God’s word.
